Yuki Midorikawa’s Natsume ‘s Book of Friends (Natsume Yūjin-Chō) manga launched in Hakusensha’s LaLa DX magazine in June 2003, but has been serialized in LaLa since 2007.
Midorikawa’s story revolves around Natsume, a boy who has been able to see youkai since childhood. Unfortunately, humans shun him, and don’t have much affection for Natsume and youkai either. One day, he inherited a Yūjin-Chō (“Book of Friends”) from his grandmother. The book is actually filled with contracts his grandmother made to trap youkai. As youkai after youkai appear, Natsume tries to free them or help them — even as many of them seek revenge on him.
The anime’s sixth season premiered in April 2017. The series has 11 episodes and two OVAs.
The Natsume Yujin-cho the Movie: Ephemeral Bond movie premiered in September 2018.
Natsume’s Book of Friends: The Stone Waker and the Strange Visitor movie opened in Japan in January 2021.
