Riyoko Ikeda's The Rose of Versailles Revolutionized Shojo Manga & Anime
The Rose of Versailles is based on the classic shojo manga by Riyoko Ikeda. It is a historical drama set before and during the French Revolution, following the lives of Queen Marie Antoinette of France and the commander of the Royal Guard, Oscar François de Jarjayes. The 1972 manga received critical acclaim for its gripping political drama and its exploration of LGBTQ+ romance through the character of Oscar, a woman raised as a man. The series is also responsible for shifting the public perception of shojo anime and manga from children's stories to stories aimed at young adults.
