Two years after the film was announced, The Rose of Versailles is finally back with a brand new promotional video, a new key visual, information about the production team and cast, and a much-anticipated release date.
Based on the manga series by Riyoko Ikeda, The Rose of Versailles recently announced that The film adaptation produced by MAPPA is scheduled to premiere in spring 2025. The announcement was made through a web domain created for the series and was accompanied by a short trailer posted on the series' official YouTube channel.
The film will be directed by Ai Yoshimura, best known for directing hit series such as Anohana: The Flower We SawThat Day and Blue Spring Ride. Meanwhile, The music for the film will be produced by Hiroyuki Sawano, who has become quite a household name since participating in Attack on Titan and more recently Solo Leveling.

Hailed as a timeless masterpiece by Riyoko Ikeda, The Rose of Versailles was originally announced as a film in the works for 2022, but little else was known about the project until recently. The series is a staple of the shoujo genre, and despite decades having passed since it first appeared on screen, it certainly still has a loyal fan base around the world who are eagerly awaiting its return.
Luckily, since the project has been taken over by MAPPA, the film certainly won’t disappoint in terms of animation quality or visuals. The trailer and key visuals have given a glimpse of what to expect from the film, which so far looks very promising. The script for the same film has been written by Tomoko Konparu, who most notably worked on Nana and Urusei Yatsura.
Meanwhile, Mariko Oka, who has worked as a key animator for several major shojo anime such as Yuri on Ice, Banana Fish, and xxxHolic, is responsible for bringing The Rose of Versailles' iconic character designs to life. The film's main voice cast has also been revealed, with Aya Hirano voicing Marie Antoinette, Sawashiro Miyuki voicing Oscar Francois de Jarjayes, Toshiyuki Toyonoga voicing Andre Grandier, and Kazuki Kato voicing Hans Axel von Fersen.
