As is known, since 2025, small regions such as VCS, PCS… will be grouped into the APAC region when determining regions participating in MSI or CKTG. This was announced a while ago, causing the Vietnamese LoL community to explode in controversy and worry. According to many people at that time, although this was understandable, it could limit the MSI and CKTG slots for VCS and turn this tournament back to the previous LMS era, when VCS had to compete in the same region with teams from Japan, Chinese Taipei… Because the level between small regions was also uneven, it unintentionally hindered the development of VCS until it was separated by Riot in 2020.
However, recently, in an additional share after the announcement of events for VCS next year, Riot representative ChisinX also said: “PCS has taught us a lot over the past few years and the most important lesson is that the effort to narrow the competitive gap between LMS and LST players at that time was not really successful for many reasons, including the timing (the rise of mobile MOBAs in the region and COVID-19). In addition, it was also about navigating the complexities of releasing games. Nothing is certain but we hope to get the APAC tournament on the right track”.
“Some changes are needed to the way Tier 2 teams operate, but we are committed to ensuring that key markets (VCS, PCS…) will have strong partners to work with us in continuing and developing their local leagues, as well as providing talent to teams. It is also to compete for APAC spots through promotion and relegation,” ChisinX affirmed.
From the statement of Riot representative, it can be understood that the prospect of VCS being restrained by being merged with regions with not really strong LoL background in APAC region like before will not happen. However, the ticket to CKTG and MSI will now be really more difficult and VCS teams themselves will have to make an effort if they do not want to be eliminated “at the first round” before reaching the international playground.
