Aoashi debuted in Shogakukan's Weekly Big Comic Spirits magazine in January 2015, with the story developed from an original idea by Naohiko Ueno. The series follows the journey of Ashito Aoi, a third-year high school student living in Ehime Prefecture. Despite possessing outstanding talent in soccer, Ashito tries to hide his abilities, but his outspoken personality gets him into many troubles. Ashito's life took a turn when Tatsuya Fukuya, a former member of J-League team Tokyo City Esperion and now a youth team coach, recognized his potential. Tatsuya invited Ashito to try out for the youth team in Tokyo, opening up the journey to pursue his dream of professional football.
The manga was honored with the Best General Manga award at the 65th Shogakukan Manga Awards and achieved sales of more than 15 million copies. The success of the series was also extended by the anime adaptation, which premiered on NHK Educational on April 9, 2022. The anime continued with a second season, premiering on July 2, 2022, and is streamed on Crunchyroll.
With a journey lasting nearly a decade, Aoashi not only left a deep impression in the hearts of sports fans but also inspired the will and efforts to overcome challenges. The upcoming end of the series promises to bring a meaningful and satisfying ending to readers.
