Developer PlatinumGames revealed that Bayonetta 3 will feature an optional censorship mode that turns off certain “specific” elements in the game.
Fans will finally be seeing the launch of Bayonetta 3 later this year. It’s one of the most anticipated releases from PlatinumGames on Switch, with gamers getting a brief look at the game last fall during the Nintendo Direct. Expectations for the game grew as the most recent Bayonetta 3 trailer revealed a release date, confirming the title would arrive near the end of October.
The new trailer showcased the game’s premise, new enemies, as well as Bayonetta’s new demonic powers. It also introduces some characters like Rodin, Enzo and Luka, all of which are fan favorites. Bayonetta 3 also introduces Viola, an Umbra witch who can summon a giant Cheshire Cat doll and use a katana to fight, with her fighting style and appearance similar to Raiden’s. in Metal Gear Rising and Nero from Devil May Cry. While this trailer showcases the action and character models in their original skins, PlatinumGames revealed there is an optional censorship mode for certain players.
The mode was announced in a tweet from PlatinumGames itself, calling it the “Naive Angel” mode. When this mode is on, it will mask some elements that show a lot of “flesh” from Bayonetta, such as when she performs her Wicked Weave attacks. Instead of completely removing Bayonetta’s coat, she will be covered by a jumpsuit. This also applies to Bayonetta’s Masquerade transitions, with the tweet featuring a video showing the difference between whether the mode is enabled or not.
This mode is said to be completely optional and helps attract a wide player base, attracting players who don’t like the excessive eroticism of the game. Interestingly, PlatinumGames alludes to this mode being best for “playing right in the living room” without the game being confused with something else. Fans note that this mode is similar to how Bayonetta is handled in the Super Smash Bros. series, with some even calling it the “Smash Bros.” mode.
With this mode in place, it has the potential to help Bayonetta 3 gain a larger playerbase, without alienating any fans of the franchise’s adventurous elements. With just a few months left before its release, PlatinumGames is doing a lot to help attract as many game followers as possible, with this mode being one way to do so.
