Hideo Kojima has said that he rewrote Death Stranding 2 to make it themed with what billions of people around the world went through during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, while also reflecting how the entertainment industry itself has changed because of it. Recently, Death Stranding 2 was revealed, this is the sequel to the game released in 2019 developed by Japanese director Kojima Productions’ own studio. Rumors of a sequel have been circulating for a while, with Kojima himself leaving some confusing clues on his media channels. Although the first game divided the community, with some finding the “shippet” simulation aspects and cut scenes unappealing, Death Stranding was certainly a huge success and many are now watching it. looking forward to the next part.
Hideo Kojima recently spoke to IGN about the Death Stranding sequel, and one particular aspect of the interview stands out. During a discussion about the COVID-19 pandemic, the director said that he has rewritten the script for DS2 to reflect the changes the world has undergone in 2020 and perhaps beyond. Kojima said that people “can’t pretend that something this big never happened”, adding that while Death Stranding’s characters are not “bound by our reality” ”, then the people who experience the game have really experienced the pandemic.
Considered one of the most influential figures in Japanese gaming, Kojima’s career spans more than three decades and his work has been celebrated for generations.
He went on to say that he wrote Death Stranding 2 to reflect these themes and felt that a work of fiction written before the pandemic would “not resonate” with audiences in the same way. There’s no denying that COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the game, both within the community at large and the industry itself, especially in development. Many game studios and even movie studios have had to postpone their products due to the pandemic, and even the hardware market is suffering from a tense atmosphere as more and more people play games during the quarantine period, even though computers gaming and PC simply cannot meet the demand, leading to shortages.
In addition to the sequel, there is also a Death Stranding movie in the works. If that wasn’t enough, Hideo Kojima also teased another project and started a podcast not too long ago.
