Epic Games released Unreal Engine 5.1 as an update to the game engine that can be used to build the metaverse.
The new update aims to make Unreal Engine 5 easier and faster to create 3D content. Epic Games Company has added a bunch of new features and improvements that were tested in version 5.1. Unreal becomes more powerful, efficient, and flexible for creators in all areas of application.
More than half of the announced next-gen games are being built with the Unreal Engine, says Epic Games. Developers can now take advantage of updates to the Lumen lighting system. This is important content for game developers or anyone looking to build metadata.
The new version also updates the Nanite virtualized polygon geometry system and lays the groundwork for experiential games that run at 60 FPS. Epic Games says these improvements enable fast-paced games and detailed simulations with no lag.
Additionally, Nanite has also added a programmable pixel scraper to enable material-based animation and distortion through position compensation as well as reducing character opacity. This development paves the way for artists to use Nanite to program the behavior of specific objects, such as Nanite-based foliage that creates realistic effects of flying in the wind.
UE 5.1 also adds a number of features to improve efficiency for game developers and other large-scale interactive projects, helping teams work more efficiently. For developers building massive open worlds, this release also offers additional functionality and improved workflows.
The Unreal Engine is now used on more than 425 film and television productions, and integrated into more than 300 production stages worldwide. With enhancements in the tailor-made Unreal Engine 5.1, technicians and artists can now work with dedicated in-camera VFX editors, an improved remote API system, editing tools, and more. In Unreal Engine 5.1, users get OpenEXR support which allows EXR to be converted to the correct format for optimum. UE 5.1 also adds improvements to the Lightmass GPU, including support for Sky Atmosphere, Fixed Sky Light, lighting features like IES profiles, Rect Light textures, and improved quality and performance on devices using this technology.
