A Reddit post analyzing exactly where anime main characters typically sit during class has gone viral, and it highlights a clear favorite.
Reddit user u/Math082r posted the chart on December 26, 2023, including what he said were more than 200 anime and the seats of the main characters in them. It corroborates what many fans have long felt was the most common trend—main characters sitting next to windows and as far away from chalkboards as possible. The post, which can be seen below, received more than 10k upvotes in less than a week, with the general feeling that this is “not the chart we need but the chart we deserve ”.

Unsurprisingly, the 37 main characters sit in the seats furthest from the blackboard and next to the window, with that common area taking up the highest proportion by far. Characters sitting in this particular seat or the area immediately adjacent to this include Ayanokouji from Classroom of the Elite, Touma from A Some Magical Index, Light from Death Note, and Tamako from Tamako’s Love Story. While there are many different reasons for this seating arrangement, the most common reason is that it is the easiest way to paint a landscape backdrop because there are fewer people. Additionally, school anime often rely on introverted protagonists, building a connection with an initial person. Placing the main character in an isolated place allows for a more realistic relationship to be built, as opposed to a romance that begins right in front of the teacher.
However, fans have noted a few exceptions, the biggest being My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU’s Hikigaya Hachiman, who sat near the hallway in position 7. Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible’s Junta Shiraishi is the only character in the back row next to the entrance. While this list is certainly not exhaustive, it has prompted many people to say they want to refine and add to the list, with another commentator adding that this could spark an entire isekai anime trend lean on the chair.
