The latest trailer for Bucchigiri, the new original anime series from studio MAPPA, seems to remind anime fans of previous crime series from the early 2000s.
Released on MAPPA’s official YouTube channel, Bucchigiri’s latest trailer reveals more about its delinquent cast while indulging in slapstick teen humor. The film follows Arajin Tomoshibi as he transfers to Ichizu High School, a school famous for its troublemaking students. Luckily for him, Araji is reunited with his old friend Mataka Asamine as the battle to see who is the strongest is about to begin.

Deleted MAPPA tweet goes viral again after spreading to Instagram: “I want to die quickly”
MAPPA faced further backlash after a deleted post by a Jujutsu Kaisen animator with the message “I want to die quickly” was posted to Instagram.
In addition to feeling reminiscent of early 2000s gangster anime like Cromartie High School, Bucchigiri also incorporates elements from Middle Eastern folklore One Thousand and One Nights with the addition of a genie character named Majin Senya (at the end of the trailer is Arajin). declares to Majin that he wants to lose his virginity). While the nostalgic feel from Bucchigiri is welcome, some anime fans aren’t excited about the original series coming out in a more colorful take on Tokyo Revengers.
Admittedly, some of this criticism may be fueled by MAPPA’s lack of updates on other anime projects like Chainsaw Man Season 2 and the Yuuri on Ice movie. While scrutiny of MAPPA’s workplace culture has grown stronger, outrage over the studio’s handling of the franchise has subsided since the announcement of the animated Chainsaw Man. Unfortunately, news about Yuri!!! On Ice the Movie: Ice Youth is still cold.

MAPPA and Mari Okada’s new anime is coming to Netflix
Netflix reveals the trailer and release date for MAPPA’s latest film Maboroshi, directed by Mari Okada (Toradora, Anohana, Black Butler).
The Bucchigiri anime is being directed by Hiroko Utsumi, an anime director known for her work at Kyoto Animation. Although she has acted in light-hearted comedies like K-ON at KyoAni, Utsumi’s directorial duties on Free! Part 1 is probably most compared to Bucchigiri. In addition to KyoAni, Utsumi also made Banana Fish and SK8 the Infinity, both of which share the same Bucchigiri guilt. The three films mentioned above are also associated with the male-female romance genre, a genre that Bucchigiri seems to have taken inspiration from in its latest trailer.
Bucchigiri will begin airing on January 13, 2024. Anime streaming service Crunchyroll has licensed the series for North American audiences. Bucchigiri’s opening song, “Sesame,” will be performed by Kroi. Jazz pianist Mahiru Coda will perform the ending theme song “Love Je t’aime”.
