In 2019, Yahagi appeared on the radio show Izakaya: Denfaminicogamer along with Matsuyama Hiroshi, another manga editor. On the show, he was asked about Naruto's appeal overseas compared to One Piece and the reason behind it. The host asked, “Why is Naruto more popular overseas than One Piece?”

Yahagi replied, “The series looks cool even to people overseas.” He further explained, “One Piece's plot is very interesting. On the other hand, Naruto is easier to understand because of the action and other aspects rather than the plot. I have children and when I show them, the thing they don't understand the most is the drama.”
Objectively, this comment makes sense. One Piece has a very deep and detailed plot with an expansive world. While Naruto's story is simpler and more universal, thus easier to understand for the average or young viewer.
However, One Piece fans were not very happy with the editor's comments. Many blamed the American 4kids version of One Piece, which ruined a lot of the original dialogue and censored many important scenes.
One fan commented: “The obvious reason why OP was unpopular at the time was because of the 4kids dub and practically the entire adaptation.”
Another user pointed out, “I like Naruto and the depth of the main characters' personalities, but in terms of plot, One Piece is unmatched.”
“While Naruto shows a lot of its complexity from the start, One Piece often leaves a lot of details in the background of the main story, allowing for plot building for later arcs,” another added.
