Streaming giant Netflix is bringing another video game to television, with an animated series based on the Tomb Raider franchise.

The highly anticipated series titled Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft, recently released its first teaser trailer during Netflix’s Drop 01 event that celebrates all the current and upcoming animated projects to the company. The trailer offers a glimpse of the upcoming animated series starring the iconic archaeologist.

While the video doesn’t feature any dialogue, it teases that the series will feature a grittier atmosphere reminiscent of recent games. Filled with the sounds of heavy breathing, the clip shows the protagonist walking through various locations, including a hole and a cave. The character also stumbles upon an ancient mural and a family photo. The preview ends with Lara shooting an arrow that reads “A Netflix Series” and lands on a map, which then names the studio and the title of the series.

The partnership between Netflix and Legendary Entertainment for the Tomb Raider series was initially announced in January 2021, along with the reveal of the Skull Island project, which recently hit the streaming service. The creators aim for an anime adaptation, with Tasha Huo serving as showrunner and executive producer. The series will retain the game’s continuity and pick up narrative threads after the events of the game’s reboot trilogy.

Marvel Cinematic Universe actress Hayley Atwell voices Lara Croft. Additionally, Earl Baylon, known for his role as Jonah Maiva in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, will reprise the role. Rounding out the cast, Allen Maldonado will play Zip, Lara’s tech-savvy ally.

The first film in the franchise debuted in 2001 with Paramount’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, which was inspired by the first games and starred Angelina Jolie in the title role. Jolie reprized the character in the 2003 sequel, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life. In 2018, MGM and Warner Bros. released a reboot starring Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft. This adaptation draws heavily from the 2013 game. With a legacy that includes 12 main series games and various spin-offs, the Tomb Raider franchise has left a significant mark on gaming culture since its inception. First released in 1996.

Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft will launch on Netflix in 2024.
