What happened in Nier: Automata Ver1.1a Episode 21?
Produced by A-1 Pictures; Directed by Satoshi Saga
In Nier: Automata Ver1.1a episode #21, “[N]oh human village,” 9S reached the last sub-unit, and calling itself the God Box, it hid its core inside 2B's damaged flight unit. As 9S moved to destroy it, God Box played 2B's last message about wanting someone to take care of 9S and how much she loved being with him.All of which only made him angry. 9S destroyed the core in another fit of rage, and with all three sub-units destroyed, the Tower's AI happily announced that it was now officially open.
Meanwhile, Pascal makes quick work of the Goliath-level machine, but another problem soon arises: the children in Pascal's village have infected the Resistance's robots with the Logic Virus, forcing Lily to lead the few who have avoided infection into battle against their former allies. Unfortunately, by the time A2 reaches their camp, everyone but Lily has been killed, and with no other choice, A2 killed Lily before she could be corrupted by the Logic Virus.while still revealing that Rose gave her the name Freesia before she died.
While A2 deals with Lily, Pascal goes to find the children, only to discover that one of them was so frightened by the current situation that he ate the other children alive. Pascal blames himself for teaching them about fear, but not how to properly handle fear, and when the child tries to infect Pascal with the Logic Virus, Pascal destroyed himself and took the child with him.. However, before A2 could mourn, she heard the announcement of the Tower opening and she headed towards it at the same time as 9S.
Nier: Automata Anime Reveals Another Important Reference to Drakengard
Amidst all the chaos of Nier: Automata Ver1.1a episode #21, the anime notably dropped a major reference to Drakengard, the larger franchise that the Nier video game franchise exists within. As the Resistance discussed how to handle the Logic Virus outbreak, they accidentally mentioned how the situation reminded them of the trouble they had with an arms dealer named Accord a century ago.
Accord is a robot from Drakengard 3 who observes events on behalf of the mysterious Watchers, and as such, Nier: Automata Ver1.1a's direct reference to Accord is a blatant reference to Drakengard Franchise. This isn't the first time the anime has mentioned Drakengard.
Nier: Automata does mention Accord in certain sections, but she is never directly mentioned by the characters, like in the anime.
For example, Nier: Automata Ver1.1a season 1 broadcasted news of a dead dragon in Shinjuku, which was the ending of the first Drakengard that caused everything in the Nier series, and season 2's ending song alluded to Zero from Drakengard 3 through covering one of 2B's eyes with a flower. Nier: Automata Ver1.1a continues to pay great homage to the larger Drakengard franchiseand if lucky, it will bring great success to the entire brand.
