The students of My Hero AcademiaClass 1-A is a great example of how compelling and unique the series' power system is. Each of these stalwart warriors has their own unique power, all with their own strengths and weaknesses. However, not all of Class 1-A's Quirks are equally powerful or versatile.
Among the most capable students in the series, Momo Yaoyorozu stands out for how useful her Quirk is. Unfortunately, the Vice President of Class 1-A's ability isn't as relevant to the story as it should be. Her power to create any object by turning lipids into the necessary materials should have made her one of the series' powerhouses.
Momo's abilities surpass most people in class 1-A.
Her abilities and intelligence should have made her one of the best hero students.
The My Hero Academia series explains Yaoyorozu's Quirk, named Creation, as follows the ability to convert lipids in the body into any other material. For this ability to be effective, Momo needs to know the exact chemical composition of the item she wants to create. The Yaoyorozu heiress has researched various compounds for many years, making her one of the most knowledgeable members of Class 1-A. While not a powerful fighter, her Quirk and intelligence alone are enough to quickly help her climb the ranks of Class 1-A.
However, Yaomomo never stood out among her classmates, as her Quirk was mostly used to create simple weapons or small gadgets to help her in specific situations. Creation's full potential was never shown throughout the series, which has been pointed out by fans multiple times. Such a powerful and nearly unstoppable Quirk should have given Momo the ability to defeat most of her opponents. For example, in her battle with Tokoyami in episode 21, Yaoyorozu created a shield to protect herself from Dark Shadow's attacks. Instead, she should have created a tool capable of counterattacking her opponents.
While this initial defeat may have been due to her lack of combat experience and nervousness, her attitude towards combat never changes much as the story progresses. Even after her mock battle with Aizawa, during the Final Exam Arc of the series, Yaomomo's fighting style is still simple and unimaginative.. Her actual weapon is a metal stick that doesn't help her against dangerous villains. The best battles Yaoyorozu has are the ones where she thinks outside the box and uses her Quirk in unexpected ways.
Yaomomo's Quirk has the ability to mimic other abilities.
Her power to create any chemical compound opens up many possibilities.
While Yaoyorozu's Quirk is technically one of the strongest in the series, her performance has always made it seem inferior to other Quirks like Explosion or Half-Hot Half-Cold. However, Creation is capable of creating effects similar to those of Bakugo or Todoroki. Evidence of this is given in episode 121, where Momo creates various sedatives in an attempt to defeat Gigantomachia. The fact that she can create these substances implies that her Quirk can create more than just solid matter.
If this is the case, her powers could allow her to replicate a liquid similar to the one contained in Bakugo's sweat, which could be ignited to explode. Likewise, she could create a flammable substance that she could ignite to incapacitate opponents. Furthermore, since Yaoyorozu can seemingly replicate any material, she could copy other Quirks such as Midnight's sleeping gas or even Deku's Smokescreen. The possibilities Momo could achieve if her Quirk was properly developed are endless.
Ultimately, Momo is relegated to a supporting role, forced to use her abilities in unimaginative ways. Most of her battles see her create a cannon, a blunt weapon, or a distraction so that stronger fighters like Todoroki can shine. With more screen time and creativity, it's hard to imagine all that Momo could have accomplished in the series. However, her character development is nothing to scoff at, as her story is one of overcoming insecurities and stepping into one's power. While she may be a much better fighter, Momo is still an inspiration.
The story created by the lovely Kohei Horikoshi may have missed out on some interesting and engaging characters like Yaoyorozu. Even so, the world of My Hero Academia It's still a thrilling and fascinating reality that most fans of the series would love to live in. Quirks that are given the proper time and development on screen will forever be some of anime's most iconic, imaginative, and confusing abilities.
