With the global release knocking on the door, fans are curious to see how Shinkai’s latest film will stack up with his other two films. Will it bring such hype and ‘eyes’? Will it have chart-destroying songs like Grand Escape and Zenzenzense? This is a movie review Suzume No Tojimari no spoilers!
Your Name & Weathering With You are quite similar. So many people feel that Shinkai should stop copying the same theme. And it seems he took those criticisms to heart because Suzume No Tojimari Movie feels very different. At the same time, there is a general pattern that Makoto still follows! Read on to know more.
Inside The Mind of Makoto Shinkai: New Movie Same Theme With Your Name?
Unlike his previous works, Shinkai based his film on a true event in Japan. On March 11, 2011, a large earthquake and tsunami hit the Tohoku region of Japan. This disaster claimed countless lives. The mood in Japan has changed dramatically due to this. To this day, the event is still very sensitive to the Japanese. And a film about that emotional trauma could have brought critics to the fore. But Shinkai managed to plan it out. In Your Name, he wrote about preventing disasters. And about accepting them in Weathering With You. So after 11 years, he is about to bring the story to the younger generation that has never witnessed this disaster.
Shinkai has put in the same mystical elements as his other films. However, he will firmly bring his fans to reality. The new series is filled with Japanese myths, just like Your Name. Kimi no Na Wa uses the Musubi Shinto religion as the core of the film. Likewise, similar myths related to Shinto will also be featured in the new film. While Your Name is about finding something new, Suzume No Tojimari is about protecting what’s already there.
Suzume No Tojimari Movie Review: Plot & Visuals
The story centers on a high school girl, Suzume. She lives with her aunt in southern Japan. One day, a man named Souta came to her area. She follows him and finds a door in the ruins of a mountain. The world through the door is another world. Disaster ruined it. Soon, the door closed, and they found themselves in the midst of chaos. Meanwhile, a cat named Daijin turns Souta into a chair. Now Suzume has to go through the doors to prevent disaster in some parts of Japan and save Souta.
Outstanding animation quality, with breathtaking cinematography. Unlike previous films based in Tokyo, Shinkai focuses on other regions. He has carefully selected landscapes focusing on old rural trains, harbors and mandarin fields. Meanwhile, RADWIMPS is back this time. Mokoto manages to keep the sound effects playing throughout the movie, pausing only for a few brief minutes to enjoy the peaceful silence. Using the film’s sound elements, he toyed with the viewer’s emotions. However, this time the music failed to connect with the fans emotionally.
Suzume No Tojimari movie review: Conclusion
The romance is more muted in the new film. This is obvious because Souta stays in the chair for half the time of the movie. Your name, on the other hand, has deep character moments when the two share each other’s bodies for a long time. As a result, every track and song inserted was a resounding success. In the end, many will find the new film divisive due to the theme it is based on. However, it is too early to judge. International fans are still calm before the storm. This movie could become Makoto Shinkai’s masterpiece. Here we end our Suzume No Tojimari Movie Review! The movie will be released in winter 23. Stay tuned for more updates!
