Warning: Contains spoilers for chapter #268 of Jujutsu Kaisen.
While Ryomen Sukuna may have gone out with a groan in the fight for the future of Jujutsu Kaisen In the universe, he has undoubtedly proven himself to be the most powerful mage in the history of the world, no small feat considering he has defeated most of the jujutsu mage community.
In Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter #268, the epic battle between the King of Curses and his opponent finally ended with Sukuna's unexpected defeat. Specifically, when Megumi regained his reason to live, he began to fight Sukuna from within. At the same time, Yuji continued to attack from the outside, and Nobara continued to “smash” his soul from afar.
Ultimately, the weakened Sukuna split his power between trying to regain control of Megumi and defending himself against Yuji, proving powerless against Yuji's Black Flash, which ripped Megumi away from him and turned him into a pool of cursed energy. When given the chance to live and reform himself under Yuji's control, the once confident King of Curses chose death as he lived violently without remorse for the harm, death, and chaos he had caused over the centuries.
Sukuna fears no witch, living or dead.
Sukuna relishes the chance to face anyone who believes they can defeat him.
While Sukuna's actual death was a bit of an anti-climax – perhaps a sign that creator Gege Akutami was rushing to tie up any loose ends before the series ended – his performance before his death was truly spectacular. It was a true testament to his strength, skill, power, intelligence, and will. Sure, fans have seen some amazing displays of power and magic throughout the series, but No one can take on as many strong opponents at once as Sukuna.
Indeed, the only two other mages who could be considered on par with Sukuna in terms of power were Kenjaku and Gojo. While Kenjaku defeated many powerful opponents, including the Special Class mage Yuki Tsukumo, he was so afraid of fighting Gojo that he “hired” Sukuna to protect him. On the other hand, Gojo’s immense power meant that he was rarely pushed to the limits of his abilities, until he met Sukuna on the battlefield and lost.
Sukuna went up against the best and almost won.
Sukuna's defeat was ultimately due to his nature as a reincarnation curse.

Sukuna never runs away from a fight; he usually makes the others run away or go straight to the afterlife. Suppose Kenjaku allowed him to fight Gojo right after he was freed from Hell. In that case, he could have won before Gojo's disciples had a chance to develop their many alternative plans.
Instead, Sukuna fought and killed Gojo – a feat that in itself proved his greatness. He then faced off against the best of jujutsu, all of whom had time to prepare and strategize against Sukuna. He often fights many opponents at the same time.never resting for a moment, and still persevering. There has never been a more impressive display of individual strength in the manga. In the end, Sukuna could only be defeated by his own self, his former host Yuji Itadori, who had become stronger thanks to the “memories” Sukuna imprinted on his body.
While it could be argued that without Megumi's Ten Shadows technique (and Mahoraga), Sukuna could not have defeated Gojo, the latter admitted that this was not true and Sukuna did not even go all out against him.
Sukuna may have contributed to his own downfall by underestimating that his possession of Yuji would come back to haunt him. However, it must still be pointed out that Sukuna was not actually defeated: he was forced out of Megumi's body, leaving him in a weakened and vulnerable state due to his nature as a reincarnation curse.
“You were just lucky. Being born a thousand years later saved your life.” – Uraume
If tribe fought in his original body at the height of his power, as his loyal assistant Uraume reminded everyone, no one in Jujutsu Kaisen The universe can defeat him.
