The community had many interesting experiences at the 10th The Game Awards 2022, the largest gaming award ceremony in the gaming industry. The event set new records in terms of viewership and engagement on social networks.
According to The Game Awards, the show drew a record viewership of 103 million live streams globally, up 20% from the previous record-setting performance of 2021.
Also, The Game Awards in 2022 are the most discussed according to Maven Road’s social analysis. This year, the program was talked about in discussions 308,000 times on the day of the event, up nearly 180% from 2021.
This year’s Game Awards viewership is up from 2021, reporting 103 million live streams across more than 30 digital platforms including YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok Live, Instagram and Steam. The show has also worked with regional providers in China and India to stream the event.
However, it’s important to note that the metric The Game Awards is using to report live viewership and not average viewership/AMA. This is to aggregate more objective data, but is not used for direct comparisons with TV shows.
The Game Awards boosted record viewership on YouTube and Twitch. Peak viewership on YouTube increased from 604,000 to 1.33 million, a 37% year-over-year increase; Twitch from 571,000 to 1.9 million, a 20% year-over-year increase. Looking at this viewership data, it’s clear that there are more viewers on YouTube.
Game Awards also utilizes Steam to broadcast the show. The channel peaked at 850,000 concurrent users watching the event. While some of this viewership is natural, Valve also gives a Steam Deck to viewers on its platform every minute of airtime with viewership rewards.
In addition to getting more viewers, discussion around The Game Awards has also increased with three main topics being fan votes, community response, and awards show highlights.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the winner of Game of the Year went to Elden Ring, which is also the most talked about game. FromSoftware’s victory was generally recognized and there were no mixed reviews. However, some fans expressed their displeasure when God of War Ragnarök did not bring home the high prizes expected.
The announcement of Death Stranding 2 is expected. Geoff Keighley and Hideo Kojima made an important announcement at The Game Awards about the product that caused fans to start speculating about the game regarding the release date as the manufacturer hasn’t made an official announcement yet.
