Studio Bones has revealed more details about its upcoming sci-fi anime series, Metallic Rouge.
Unlike the studio’s previous hit, My Hero Academia, Metallic Rouge is not based on any other existing works. The anime’s official website is currently introducing the third promotional video, revealing exciting action scenes in a mecha style. Bones also revealed the full staff and cast list for Metallic Rouge. The series is scheduled to begin airing in Japan in January 2024, airing on Fuji Television’s Ultra+ programming block. Earlier this year, Crunchyroll confirmed that it would stream Metallic Rouge to subscribers in all major territories, excluding Asia.
Metallic Rouge is classified as “tech noir” — a science fiction subgenre that blends film noir with dark plot elements. Its story is set in a world where robots and humans coexist. The series’ hero Rouge and her partner Naomi are sent to Mars to murder a team of nine robots known as the Immortal Nine, which the government considers hostile. As shown in the trailer, the android can take on a powered-up mech form when engaged in battle but otherwise resembles a normal human.
Motonobu Hori, who worked as a storyboard artist on My Hero Academia and Berserk: Golden Age Arc, is directing Metal Rouge at studio Bones. Toshizo Nemoto (Mobile Suit Gun: Cucuruz Doan’s Island) and Yutaka Izubuchi (Star Blazers 2199, Space Battleship Yamato 2199) are collaborating on the series. Toshihiro Kawamoto, who served as animation director for Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, is designing the characters. Takuya Ebisawa (Mobile Suit GTA Seed Destiny) is responsible for art direction, while Tomoyuki Hirao will handle mechanical design. Yuma Yamaguchi (Flavors of Youth) and Towa Tei (Appleseed: Ex Machina) are composing the film’s music. Metallic Rouge stars Yume Miyamoto (Mobile Suit: The Witch From Mercury) and Tomoyo Kurosawa (Aikatsu!) as Lulu (Rouge) Red Star and Naomi Ortman, respectively.
In addition to My Hero Academia, Bones is also known as the producer of Mob Psycho 100 and Fullmetal Alchemist.
