The opening and ending theme songs for the Jujutsu Kaisen anime adaptation of the “Shibuya Incident” have been posted online.
Available on TOHO Animation’s official YouTube channel, these videos present unoriginal versions of animated sequences. The opening theme – “Specialz” by King Gnu – introduces the upcoming brutal battle between the wizards of Jujutsu High and special level curses, highlighting many fan-favorite characters who who will play an important role in the plot. The ending theme – “more than words” by Hitsujibungaku – is much more conciliatory and sees the main trio of Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki of Jujutsu Kaisen hanging out together.
Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen manga debuted in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in March 2018, and the most recent chapters show the story reaching its conclusion. The plot follows Itadori, an athletically gifted high school student who is recruited by a group of Jujutsu Mages after he swallows the withered and rotten fingers of the King of Curses, Ryomen Sukuna. A member of the Dark Triad of the Shonen genre, Jujutsu Kaisen stands alongside classics such as Hiromu Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist and Yoshihiro Togashi’s Yu Yu Hakusho as one of the best-selling manga series in history with over 80 million copies released globally.
The first season of the anime adaptation by studio MAPPA originally aired 24 episodes between October 2020 and March 2021, and like Akutami’s manga, the season achieved a profound level of success. Most notably, it won the Best TV Anime categories at the Newtype Anime Awards and Anime of the Year as well as the Best Villain and Best Ending categories at the 2021 Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 premiered as part of the Summer 2023 anime series. The first half really shifted focus away from Itadori and his classmates and focused on the past of their teacher – Satoru Gojo, fitting The strongest waterman alive. Describing the events of the “Hidden Inventory/Premature Death” section of the manga, the story follows Gojo during his time as a student at Jujutsu High School with his best friend turned enemy, Suguru Geto.
The second half of Jujutsu Kaisen will adapt the events of the Shibuya Incident, a large-scale terrorist attack on the main area of Tokyo. The outcome of the battle has major consequences for countless characters, including Gojo, Hanami, Kento Nanami, and Kugisaki.
Akutami’s manga is distributed in North America by VIZ Media, and the Jujutsu Kaisen anime is available on Crunchyroll.
