CBR Anime Week brought to you by HULU ANIMAYHEM
Many Transformers toy lines have featured different versions of the iconic Autobot leader, Optimus Prime. Now, the latest addition to the brand's collector's item line features a much darker version of the legendary Cybertronian.
Released as part of the new Transformers: MPG series, this toy features Optimus' darkest form: Shattered Glass Optimus Prime. Although based on an existing toy, this new release is a grim mirror of the Autobot fans know and love. Hailing from a dark universe where expectations are brutally reversed, the upcoming Prime figure proves that freedom may not be the right of all sentient beings after all.

The Transformers: MPG Unleashes the Evil of Optimus Prime
The new Optimus Prime Shattered Glass figure has been revealed through a first look showcasing the toy’s features. A repaint of the MP-44 Optimus Prime toy, this one is based on the version seen in the “Shattered Glass” universe. This world is where the morals of the Transformers faction are reversed, featuring a universe where the Decepticons wage their war to destroy the evil forces of the Autobots. Leading the latter faction is still Optimus Prime, who has swapped his usual blue and red color scheme for a more somber purple and green. The same goes for his new MPG toy, giving the evil Autobot leader a range of cool accessories.
Including his iconic Ion Gun, which he can use to easily destroy Decepticon do-gooders. His melee weapon is an energy axe, which first appeared in the early episodes of The Transformers cartoon in 1984. He also has a version of the Autobot Matrix of Leadership, which can be removed from his chest and held in his hands. Highly detailed and easily reminiscent of the design of a modern G1 figure, this toy is a must-have for fans who can't stop playing Prime, evil or not. It will be officially announced soon and will cost 33,000 yen (about $210 USD), although it won't transform and launch until March 2025.

Transformers: MPG is the latest line of Transformers toys for collectors.
The year 2024 marks the end of the beloved Transformers: Masterpiece toy line. These attempted to update the original toys for certain characters (specifically those from the original Generation 1 Transformers) while also bringing their animated figures to life. Since its inception in the early 2000s, the line has expanded beyond G1 to include characters from Beast Wars and the live-action Transformers movies. It even spawned a spin-off line in the form of The Transformers: MPG, which originally stood for Masterpiece Gattai and included toys for the combined Trainbots.
Since then, MPG has become the flagship premium Transformers line, with the G now standing for “cool.” So far, these figures have included the aforementioned Trainbots and their subsequent repaints, as well as repaints of non-combined Masterpiece toys, some of which were based on Diaclone action figures that became Transformers. One of these is MP-44, which now finds new life as MPG-12, Shattered Glass Optimus Prime. It’s unclear whether the next entries in the line will be original molds, but confirmation of this and more will likely come throughout 2024. Since this year is the 40th anniversary of the Transformers franchise, Shattered Glass Optimus Prime may just be the tip of the iceberg in terms of announcements for the line.
