Pavel Durov, founder and CEO of Telegram, will get an answer on August 28 about whether he will be formally charged and even detained. Pavel Durov was arrested in France on August 25 over allegations that the Telegram app lacked censorship measures.
Once the initial 96-hour interrogation period ends, French investigators could release Mr. Durov or charge him and detain him pending trial. He could also be released under supervision, which would include restrictions on his movements.
Mr. Pavel Durov, 39 years old, currently holds citizenship of Russia, France, the United Arab Emirates, and the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
According to the Paris Prosecutor's Office, Telegram's CEO was arrested for investigation on 12 criminal charges and could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
French President Emmanuel Macron has denied the arrest of Telegram's founder was politically motivated.
For Telegram's part, the platform said it always complies with European Union law, including the Digital Services Act and content moderation policies.
With over 900 million users, Forbes magazine estimates Mr. Durov's current net worth is $15.5 billion.
