The data is limited to anime series that aired in the first half of 2024 and stores that use Buyee as a service to handle overseas shipments. A report by Tokyo Shoko Research, Ltd. revealed that the company is Japan's largest cross-border e-commerce service, with its impact set to increase after it agreed to a deal with Mercari, a major Japanese marketplace, to handle international shipping, opening up access to inventory from millions of sellers. The company operates by purchasing products on behalf of customers through affiliate sites, either as a pop-up or as an Add to Buyee browser extension.
Demon Slayer Wins Big in 2024 with Chart-Topping Sales
The many anime titles listed are no surprise; Ensemble Stars received an anime series following its hugely successful game, which announced 18 million downloads worldwide in June. My Hero Academia and Demon Slayer are both considered turning points for streaming services and anime overseas; Toho CEO Hiroyasu Matsuoka said the surprising overseas demand from streaming services for My Hero Academia paved the way for their future titles like Jujutsu Kaisen, Frieren, and The Apothecary Diaries. He recalled that streamers “really wanted to[ing] to get My Hero Academia. We saw them make an offer even though their previous offers were still under consideration,” in an interview with VIPO.
Most of the anime listed are streaming on Crunchyroll, with Delicious in Dungeon available on Netflix. Demon Slayer will notably receive a trilogy of films based on the “Infinity Castle” arc, further boosting the anime and its marketability overseas. Its debut film, Mugen Train, is the highest-grossing anime film of all time, as well as the highest-grossing film worldwide in 2020 — the first and only time it has achieved such a feat.
