Nearly ten years after the Overlord anime's premiere, voice actor Satoshi Hino, who voices protagonist Suzuki Satoru/Ainz Ooal Gown, shared his thoughts on why the anime continues to resonate both in Japan and internationally.
Based on a light novel written by Kugane Maruyama and illustrated by So-Bbin, “Overlord” belongs to the “world transfer” subgenre of isekai. This subgenre typically sees the main characters, after death, being transported to a fictional world, often a video game or film series.
In a recent interview with Mantan Web, voice actor Hino reflected on his experience bringing the character of Ainz Ooal Gown to life.
Unlike many other isekai series, “Overlord” stands out for its focus on the dark fantasy genre. During its early stages, Hino was skeptical about whether the anime would be well received. “It's a dark fantasy series that focuses on characters who would be considered villains in many other fantasy works. Also, Overlord is one of the pioneers of the 'isekai' genre, so at first I wondered if many people would accept it. However, it's a really interesting story and I think if people watch it, they will be hooked,” the actor commented.
Like other isekai anime, Overlord begins with a protagonist being transported from his normal life to an exciting new world. What makes Overlord different, however, is Ainz, the protagonist with ambiguous morality who frequently crosses the line between good and evil.
Despite the character's conquests and questionable actions, Hino maintains that Ainz is a leader with a heavy burden on his shoulders. “He is a leader who protects his family, that is, everyone in Nazarick. Furthermore, an important aspect is how Suzuki, Ainz's former self, is influenced by his subordinates. His character is gradually eroded by Ainz as he faces the conflicts he carries with him. I tried to reflect those nuances in my performance,” Hino explained.
One of the strengths of Overlord, according to Hino, is the way the series explores human psychology in such a profound way. “What's interesting about the show is how the conversations are carefully crafted, to show the underlying emotions behind the characters' words and actions. It's interesting to watch them try to decipher each other's true intentions and negotiate accordingly. On top of that, it has the grandeur and power of a classic fantasy story. It's both serious and humorous. From the beginning, I thought it was interesting how both elements blended together so well,” he noted.
With four seasons under its belt, Overlord is gearing up for the release of its third film, titled “Overlord the Movie: The Sacred Kingdom.” The new season's plot focuses on the Sacred Kingdom of Oak, which is facing an invasion by the Demon Emperor Jaldabaoth and his demi-human army. Faced with this threat, Holy Princess Calca asks for help from Ainz and the forces of Nazarick.
In the interview, Hino highlighted several elements that will make the film an enjoyable experience for fans. “The intensity of the battles, the streets of the Holy Kingdom, and the difference in atmosphere between this kingdom and the Sorcerous Kingdom, where Nazarick is located, will be even more impressive on the big screen… I hope that many people will enjoy the film,” the actor said.
