The creative team behind the spring 2024 anime has revealed why their show didn't perform as well as expected. On the anime's official social media site, the production team gathered for one last cheer and called on fans to promote the final episode of the series.
Astro Note director Shinji Takamatsu took to X (formerly Twitter) to thank everyone who watched the series finale. “I am truly grateful to everyone who stayed with me until the end to watch this special work that pays homage to 80s TV anime,” he wrote. The film has garnered a cult following thanks to its quirky premise and vibrant characters, but it also has its share of critics who note its knack for carpet-bombing humor. Prior to the series finale, the Astro Note team acknowledged the show's limited reach and attributed this to a lack of advertising; staff apologized to fans in an X post, along with a call for support for the underground wave.

“[Apology and request] We want #Astronote TV anime to dominate…”, Astro Note staff wrote two days before the June 21 finale.. “…This is due to lack of effort from the promotion team… We apologize Sorry to everyone who supported us. Can you help us bring the final episode to life? We appreciate your help.” The post garnered significant attention, with most comments congratulating the final season with fan art and positive reviews. Naosuke Suwabe's voice actor Junichi echoed this call in his own X post, writing: “Don't declare defeat too soon! This is a carefully made and enjoyable work, so it's only fair to aim for a breakthrough from now on.” The show has an ongoing support campaign with a cool giveaway to kick it off (copies of the Episode 12 script signed by the cast).
Astro Note was originally intended to be a romantic comedy anime about robots
Astro Note tells the story of Takumi, a recently unemployed chef looking for his next job. He finds a job at the Astro-sou boarding house, owned and run by the charming Mira. Takumi becomes increasingly infatuated with her even as they navigate their daily routine at the boarding house. Takumi eventually discovers Mira is an alien royal searching for the “key” that will return her to her planet; he vows to help Mira find the key while keeping her identity a secret from Astro-sou's tenants. The story builds on this tension with slapstick humor.
