New Fate/strange Fake Anime to Premiere in Los Angeles Before Crunchyroll Debut
The television series is a sequel to the hour-long special Fate/strange Fake -Whispers of Dawn-, which premiered last July 2023. The same team behind Whispers of Dawn will return for the anime series, including directors Shun Enokido and Takahito Sakazume and composer Hiroyuki Sawano. As its name suggests, Fate/strange Fake began life as an April Fool's joke by Ryogo Narita, a light novel and manga author best known for his work on Baccano!, Vamp!, and Durarara!!. On April 1, 2008, Narita posted a fake trailer and prologue for a role-playing game he called Fake/states Night. A year later, the prank was adapted into a full light novel illustrated by Morii Shizuki and published with TYPE-MOON Ace Volume 2.
In a strange twist, Fate/strange Fake tells the story of an imperfect copy of the events of Fate/stay Night. The story is set in the United States around 2009; an unnamed organization has attempted to recreate the events of the Third Holy Grail War, which took place in 1939. The Holy Grail War is a tournament format where “Masters”—usually magi or sorcerers—summon heroic spirits, or “Servants,” and fight together in a massive battle royale until only one remains standing to receive a wish from the Holy Grail, an artifact of immense magical power. However, because the organization has imperfectly copied the ritual, the tournament in Fate/strange Fake plays out unlike any other, with unlicensed magi summoning strange Servants that don’t look very heroic.
Fate/strange Fake will have its world premiere in Los Angeles this November as part of the “Fate 20th Anniversary Showcase” event, with Crunchyroll set to stream the anime in late 2024 in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and the CIS. A specific release date for Crunchyroll’s release has yet to be confirmed.
The Fate series is huge and expansive, with multiple branching timelines and alternate continuity stories, such as the Fate/Zero prequel series, the Fate/Apocrypha alternate timeline light novel series, and the Fate/Grand Order gacha game. For anyone looking for a good starting point, the original visual novel that spawned the entire series is available on Steam. For those who aren't into visual novels, many fans recommend 2014's Fate/Stay night: Unlimited Blade Works as another viable starting point.
