T1 holds a factor that can be a “double-edged sword”
According to Riot's announcement on October 31, T1 won the coin toss and had the opportunity to choose the Blue team in the 2024 World Championship final against Bilibili Gaming. Normally, this would be a huge advantage. At this year's Worlds, since the Swiss round started, the Blue team's win rate is 57.1% – a very significant number. However, that can also be a “double-edged sword”, considering the teams that have won the coin toss to choose sides in the past.
Statistics from Worlds 2020 have shown that all teams won the coin toss for the final match, then all lost. Opening is SofM's Suning in 2020, and then followed by Damwon Gaming (2021), T1 (2022) and Weibo Gaming (2023). Worth mentioning, in 3 consecutive World Championship finals, not including the upcoming match against BLG, T1 has failed once and benefited once with this “match”.
Can T1 overcome the hurdle?
It can be said that when the 2024 World Championship final has not yet begun, T1 already has challenges to overcome. First, except for SKT T1, no other team has successfully defended the championship of this tournament. Next, BLG has never lost to T1 in a BO5 match of an international tournament. And the coin toss only adds to T1's upcoming difficulties.
But T1 also has certain advantages, in terms of psychology and performance, as no LPL team has ever won against T1 in the BO3 and BO5 matches of the World Championship. This may be a good premise, when GBV itself also carries a lot of pressure from home audiences and history. But because of that, the upcoming final promises to be extremely tense and dramatic until the last minute.
