CBR Anime Week brought to you by HULU ANIMAYHEM
The popular anime-inspired manga RWBY has found a brand new home at North America's largest manga licensor. The series is currently in exciting negotiations with VIZ Media for a highly anticipated sequel.
Via RWBY's official X (formerly Twitter), showrunner and co-creator Kerry Shawcross, along with voice actor Barbara Dunkelman (Yang Xiaolong), revealed that the series is still alive at VIZ Media. VIZ will be responsible for the production, distribution, licensing, and consumer products of the series, and it was revealed that the series may return for future stories. “As you can see,” Shawcross said, “This is a great opportunity to grow our audience and expand in the future. When we talked to VIZ, they were very excited about it as well. Obviously they care about where the show is now, but they also care about where the show came from. And they want to make sure that we can continue this story.”

RWBY is currently in talks to continue the series after Rooster Teeth closes.
Shawcross specifically added, “We are currently in discussions with them about the future of RWBY, and we are very excited about what lies ahead for this beloved franchise.” RWBY’s fate has been up in the air since Rooster Teeth closed. This reportedly came after multiple attempts by Warner Bros. to find a buyer for the studio; Rooster Teeth CEO Jordan Levin added that the closure stemmed from “the challenges facing digital media due to fundamental changes in consumer behavior and monetization across platforms, advertising, and sponsorship.”
Fans had good reason to be excited even before the announcement. RWBY's official account teased something was coming, with voice actress Lindsay Jones, who voices series protagonist Ruby Rose, coyly quoting “????????????.” The importance of the partnership between VIZ and RWBY cannot be understated; the company is the largest manga distributor in North America, with Circana Bookscan data on the top-selling manga in the US in 2023 showing VIZ accounting for 57% of total sales. Kodansha and Yen Press came in second with 13%.
