The Substance, directed by Coralie Fargeat, is a horror film about the human body scheduled to be released on September 20 this year, starring Margaret Qualley and Demi Moore.
It is worth mentioning that in the film, actress Margaret Qualley confirmed to the Sunday Times that in order to act out the hot scenes, she had to use tequila mixed with marijuana to gain more courage and complete the role more completely and naturally.
Adding to this, Margaret Qualley had to go through a huge psychological shock and encountered many difficulties when experiencing such a “heavy” role for the first time: “I don't like such overt and violent eroticism”. Besides, she also revealed a scene that made her extremely embarrassed, which was to be naked and show erotic actions in the character's dance. This was completely beyond the actress's imagination and perhaps that's why she decided to use marijuana to support.
This has caused a huge controversy for many viewers, because allowing actors to use banned substances for the filming purposes of the crew is unacceptable. Therefore, through the actress's sharing, netizens expressed their concern and anger before the film's release.
Margaret Qualley is known to be the daughter of actress and model Andie MacDowell and former model Paul Qualley. Coming from a family with a tradition of working in the arts, she also pursued the dream of success like her parents. Currently, she is known as the actress who came out after the success of The Nice Guys (2016), Death Note (2017), Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) and won Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for Maid (2019). Although her acting was not very outstanding, she was still given the opportunity to play the main role in this film. With her efforts and daring, Margaret Qualley contributed to the film's reputation and was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
The Substance is a story about two female stars playing two different versions of the same outdated TV actress. Elisabeth Sparkle is on the verge of being “out of favor” in the entertainment industry, even being fired on her 50th birthday. At a local hospital after a car accident, a young nurse secretly gives Elisabeth a tape labeled “The Substance”, promoting a mysterious invention – a drug that when injected will create a “perfect” version of herself, young and beautiful for the user. Elisabeth orders the product, a version of herself in her 20s is born. Although they are two entities, they are still one person, sharing the same mindset and ideal of conquering the entertainment industry once again after a trade-off. From here, tragedy has come to the female artist.
