First released in Japanese theaters in June 1993, Ninja Scroll is one of several iconic anime films directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. The filmmaker's other works include adult action films such as Wicked City, Demon City Shinjuku, and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. Ninja Scroll is a historical action film set in feudal Japan, with protagonist Kibagami Jubei fighting against a group of supernatural ninjas seeking to overthrow society. Animation was handled by Madhouse, a company that has gone on to create a number of beloved anime series both classic and modern. The film was also followed 10 years later by a television anime sequel Ninja Scroll: The Series.
Ninja Scroll is widely considered one of the most influential films in anime history, as it played a pivotal role in expanding the medium's international appeal. In this regard, it is often mentioned in the same breath as other iconic works like Akira and the original film adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. Like the latter, it is widely claimed to have influenced The Matrix in terms of its fight scenes. With a whole new generation of anime fans perhaps unaware of how iconic and popular the film once was, the new screenings of Ninja Scroll are sure to bring respect back to the name of this anime gem.
