June 30th is not only Sailor Moon's official birthday; it's also the annual celebration of International Sailor Moon Day. To celebrate the occasion, one talented anime cosplayer magically transformed herself into an alternate version of Sailor Mercury.
An anime cosplayer named Olga (@/carioka_go) celebrated International Sailor Moon Day 2024 by dressing up as Ami Mizuno, better known to the world as Sailor Mercury. However, this isn't a more traditional Sailor Mercury cosplay. Instead, the punk rock version of the character is based on fan art drawn by an artist named @/soo_k_0070 on Instagram. In addition to Sailor Mercury, @/soo_k_0070 has drawn several alternate versions of the Pretty Guardians, such as Sailor Neptune and Uranus, Sailor Pluto, and Sailor Moon herself with Black Lady—a grown-up, evil version of Chibi Moon.

New Sailor Moon Cosplay Costume Gives Sailor Mercury Iconic Punk Rock Look
Olga uploaded her impressive cosplay of the alternate Sailor Mercury to her Instagram account. The similarities between Olga's Sailor Mercury cosplay and the fan art by soo_k_0070 are undeniable. Key elements like Sailor Mercury's lower lip piercing, the blooming (and dark) tattoo on her right side, the pointed collar around her neck, and the small rose tattoo on her upper right cheek are all there. While Sailor Mercury's punk rock hairstyle isn't too far removed from the original, it does look and feel more alive than before. What makes this version of Mercury interesting is that in the original Sailor Moon series, Ami was shy, soft-spoken, and petite in both size and confidence—not typically traits one would associate with a hardcore rocker, making this an interesting direction to explore with the talented Pretty Guardian.
Naoko Takeuchi's Sailor Moon has had a profound impact on popular culture since the 90s.
There are many things to love about the Sailor Moon series, but among the many reasons it continues to endure with fans new and old is its majestic art style. Series creator Naoko Takeuchi designed the world of Sailor Moon with a beauty and elegance that almost seems effortless. However, the dreamlike aesthetic of the original 1992 Sailor Moon anime also continues to influence popular culture with shows like Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake and Bee and PuppyCat. Ironically, Sailor Moon's iconic pink filter wasn't intentional or present in the original television broadcast, but rather the result of color degradation due to poor film preservation and home media transfers.
