The latest Overlord movie is coming to the US
Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom, which was announced to be in production for 2021, is finally coming to Japan just in time for the fall season. The Naoyuki Ito-directed film will hit Japanese theaters on September 20, meaning this first release will be less than a month away. Luckily for fans in the United States who can't book a flight to Kyoto, they won't have to wait too long to see the film for themselves. The new Overlord film will Released in North America on November 8, 2024with screenings featuring the option for both the English dub and the Japanese dub with English subtitles. The film will be brought to the big screen by anime streaming platform Crunchyroll and Sony Entertainment, the latter of which has invested heavily in bringing anime to international audiences.
As the name might suggest, Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom adapts the “Ruble Holy Kingdom” storyline from Kugane Maruyama’s Overlord light novel series. It’s not the first Overlord film, but it is the first to tell a “new” story, as previous Overlord films were compilation films that summarized the events of multiple anime seasons. The Sacred Kingdom specifically picks up where Overlord left off in Season 4, allowing those who have already followed the series to continue the story. For those who need to catch up, all four seasons of Overlord and the compilation films are available to stream on Crunchyroll. The Western release of the new film will feature Imax and Premium Large Format options, allowing fans to experience the next chapter of the story in the best possible way.
